Odontectomy (Wisdom Tooth Extraction)

Odontectomy, also known as wisdom tooth extraction, is a surgical procedure to remove one or more impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, often cause problems such as pain, overcrowding, or misalignment when they don't have enough space to grow properly. During the procedure, the dentist or oral surgeon will administer local or general anesthesia and carefully remove the wisdom teeth from their sockets. Following the extraction, post-operative care instructions will be provided to promote healing and minimize discomfort.

Frenectomy (Lip-Tie or Tongue-Tie)

A frenectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal or modification of a frenulum, which is a small fold of tissue that connects the lips to the gums or the tongue to the floor of the mouth. Lip-tie and tongue-tie are conditions where the frenulum is too tight or restricting proper movement. This can lead to issues with breastfeeding, speech, or oral hygiene. The frenectomy procedure is performed by cutting or releasing the frenulum, allowing for improved movement and function of the lips or tongue.

Gingivectomy (Gum Tissue Removal)

Gingivectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove or reshape gum tissue. It is often done to treat gum disease or to address aesthetic concerns caused by excess gum tissue (gummy smile). During the procedure, the dentist or periodontist will administer local anesthesia to numb the area and carefully remove the excess gum tissue using a scalpel or laser. Gingivectomy helps eliminate pockets where bacteria can accumulate, improves gum health, and enhances the appearance of the smile.

Wisdom tooth surgery questions

Wisdom teeth often don't have enough space to fully emerge or develop properly. They can become impacted, meaning they are trapped beneath the gums and jawbone. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, damage to adjacent teeth, and other oral health issues. Wisdom teeth can also cause overcrowding in the neighboring teeth which causes misalignment and crooked teeth which causes bite issues.

Wisdom teeth can also be hard to reach and clean which causes tooth decays and gum infections.

There will be some pain and discomfort with slight swelling after the procedure, but very manageable with over the counter pain relievers. Slight bleeding may also last a couple of hours after the extraction.

So far, we did not have a patient that complained they cannot sleep because of unbearable pain after the procedure.

Infections can also be a possibility if proper oral hygiene practices are not followed. Symptoms may include increased pain, swelling, redness, or discharge. Please refer to our after instructions to prevent infections.

The doctor will prescribe medications to prevent infections.

The extraction of wisdom teeth near the nerves in the jaw can, in rare cases, cause temporary or permanent nerve damage. This can result in numbness, tingling, or altered sensation in the lower lip, tongue, or chin.

There’s also the possibility of allergic reactions with the anesthesia so please disclose to us beforehand of any known allergies or health issues. If you have high blood, diabetes, or pregnant, please ask clearance from your doctor first before the procedure.

We use Lidocaine anesthesia. Lidocaine is generally considered safe when used as directed and under the supervision of a healthcare professional. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic commonly used to numb an area of the body for medical or dental procedures.

Common side effects of lidocaine may include temporary numbness, tingling, or redness at the application site. In extremely rare cases, allergic reactions or more serious side effects such as irregular heartbeat or seizures can occur, but these are typically associated with really high doses or systemic administration of lidocaine.

Wisdom tooth surgery is no doubt painful but it’s very manageable. We make sure that our patients are comfortable and provide enough anesthesia to make the procedure as easy as possible to the patient. In fact, most of our patients say that having the wisdom tooth was more painful than the surgery.

The pain is very tolerable with over the counter pain relievers that a lot of our patients reported not having the need to take after a day or two.

We try to be as gentle as possible and will always ask the patient several times how they feel during the procedure. Please do not hesitate to complain if you find it too uncomfortable! We are very understanding and patient with our patients. Most of our patients are able to function normally after the procedure.

Pain and swelling can last between 1 to 2 days and gradually subsides. The first 2-3 days are the most crucial healing time and patients must make sure to take good care of their oral health and extraction area.

Strenuous physical activities, such as intense workouts or heavy lifting, should be avoided for at least a week or as advised by your dental professional.

Your stitches (if any) will dissolve on their own after a week or two, so please be careful with chewing or eating and avoid spicy foods during this time. Stick to a soft or liquid diet in the first 2 days and slowly reintroduce solid foods after.

We always recommend our patients to take pain relievers right after the surgery and the anesthesia wears off after an hour or 2.

A lot of our patients come alone during the procedure and have no issues commuting or driving themselves home after the procedure, but if you can find someone to accompany you, it’s always a lot more comforting!

The surgery can be stressful to the body so we recommend avoiding stressful and physically strenuous tasks.

It’s best to take some time off work after the surgery but if you are someone who has no choice but to work after the surgery, we advise you to take it easy at work and strictly follow our after surgery care instructions . Avoid physical tasks that may elevate your heartbeat like running or lifting heavy as it can potentially disrupt the blood clot that forms in the extraction site, leading to complications.

It is generally recommended to avoid strenuous physical activity, including working out, for at least the first few days after wisdom tooth surgery. The initial phase of healing is crucial, and engaging in vigorous exercise can potentially disrupt the blood clot that forms in the extraction site, leading to complications such as dry socket or prolonged bleeding.

Additionally, intense physical activity can increase blood pressure and heart rate, which may lead to increased bleeding and delayed healing. The swelling and discomfort associated with the surgery may also be exacerbated by vigorous exercise.

Please wait after a week of the surgery before exercising again.
